Defender of the Crown NES Game Cartridge

Defender of the Crown was developed and published by Cinemaware and released in 1987 for the NES. It was the first game for Cinemaware and the original release was on the Commodore Amiga back in 1986. The game also set a new graphical standard. The initial version was released without all of the features that were originally planned because of finances and need for more revenue. There were features that were only partially implemented but had to be removed so it could ship. Even some of the completed features never made it in the game, like flaming fireballs that were launched with the catapult, extra locations, and a more in depth strategy. Some of those features were put into ports of the game.

The game takes place in 1149 in England, which are Middle Ages. Because of the king’s death, there is fighting from different factions for control of territories. The player’s character is a Saxon, who is trying to fight the hordes of Normans for the control of England. After that is won, the player will then fight for the control of all the other territories. Some of these territories are also controlled by Saxons, with some of them becoming an antagonist. The player will need to put together armies to fight opponents to take control of their castles. You can choose to engage in battle with your army, lay siege upon the castles, or loot them. Sometimes the player can attempt to save a damsel in distress, which you then can call help from Robin Hood, the bandit of legend. Strategy of the game comes down to the player trying to put together a bigger army than the opponents and manage attacks on their territories at the best times.
