Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse NES Game Cartridge
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is the third game in the Castlevania series, and the last for the NES. Konami published the game and was released in 1990 for the NES. The events of Castlevania III take place a couple hundred years before the first game, making it a prequel.
The game’s main character is Trevor C. Belmont, who is an ancestor of Simon Belmont. Count Dracula, with his monster army, started to attack Europe in the year 1476. The Belmont family, who are vampire slayers that were exiled from Wallachia, are summoned by the Church to help fight Dracula. Even though they were afraid of the super power of the Belmonts, they had no other choice but to get Trevor Belmont, who was currently wielding the Vampire Killer Whip. Three other characters some to help Trevor who are also playable characters in the game. The first is Sypha Belnades, who is a sorceress with powerful magic but weak with physical attacks. The second is Grant Danasty, who is a pirate that has the ability of climbing walls and changing direction during a jump. The third is Alucard, who is Dracula’s son, and has the ability of shooting fireballs and transforming into a bat. One of these characters can accompany Trevor and can switch between them with the select button. The health meter is shared between Trevor and his companion of choice. The ending also varies and depends on which partner is with you at the time, or if he doesn’t take one at all.
The gameplay of Castlevania III goes back to the platformer like the first game instead of the action adventure and RPG style of Castlevania II. Castlevania III however is not linear like the first Castlevania, with the game allowing you to choose between two different paths after completing the first level and several other points in the game. There are 15 stages with two main routes. One of the three partners that you can use in the game can be found in the optional second level. Both paths have 9 stages, not including the optional second stage. The upper path will take you across a lake and onto the main bridge, and enter you through the front gate of Dracula’s castle. This path is considered the easier of the two. The lower path will take you through underground tunnels and caverns, and then eventually to the cliff side that is under the castle. This path is considered the harder of the two. During stage 6 of the lower path, there is one shorter branch section. Both paths will take you to the main hall of the castle.
