The game is considered as top game for the NES and has received great reviews since the original release. It sold many copies and is ranked in multiple gaming magazine top video games, including PC World, Nintendo Power, and Game Informer.

The game is set in 1691, with the player taking control of a man Simon Belmont to search journey through the castle of Count Dracula. The castle only appears every one hundred years. While playing as Simon, the player will fight multiple bosses which include Phantom Bat, the Grim Reaper, Queen Medusa, Igor, Frankenstein’s monster, and Dracula himself. After defeating Dracula, the castle starts to fall apart and Simon escapes. During the credits, fake names are featured to pay homage to famous actors from classic horror films, such as Christopher Lee.

Castlevania is a platformer game and has 18 stages. Those stages are split into six blocks, each having three stages. The player while controlling Simon can walk, jump, climb stairs, jump, and wield a magic whip, which is his primary weapon. There is a small delay when the button is pressed to use the whip. You start with three lives, and must complete each stage before the time runs out. If your health meter reaches completely runs out, or if the time runs out, you will lose a life. You can restore life with food and extra lives can be awarded by reaching certain scores. When reaching the end of a block, you will fight a boss that you must defeat to proceed in the game. Dracula is fought in stage 18, who is the final boss. Backup weapons are also available, but only one at a time can be carried. They will require the use of hearts to be able to use them. You can find hearts or defeated enemies will drop them.
